What's New In Silviculture Surveys
Sorrento: April 7, 2010

Silviculture survey and reporting requirements are key components of the Forest Practices Act (FRPA) and Forest Planning and Practices Regulation (FPPR). Survey information may be used for prescription creation, ascertaining compliance with standards, auditing, or monitoring. It can also be used to update long-term history files for the opening and forest cover maps. Consistency in conducting surveys is important if the information collected is to be of value. There is a need to develop a method to keep persons conducting or monitoring silviculture surveys up to date. The objective of this workshop is to ensure silviculture surveyors are aware of the most current information that will impact the way silviculture surveys are carried out. The new 2009 Silviculture Survey Procedures Manual will be available at this session.

The session will allow participants to ask survey questions of a regional examiner and will review:

  • updated survey requirements
  • critical survey office and field procedures
  • the expectations of an acceptable recommendation
  • administration and contract issues
  • common errors by surveyors and contract administrators
  • the new establishment to Free Growing Guidebook Appendix 5 & 9
  • the new maximum density levels for Southern and Northern Interior
  • the new Silviculture Surveys website features
  • Forest Cover Stratification Regulation
  • new Inventory Label requirements with RESULTS submission
  • multi-storeyed vs multi-layered stands
  • the new field cards
  • the new Silviculture Survey Procedures Manual
  • offer suggestions for change to the Silviculture Survey Accreditation Process currently under revision.
