A greater emphasis on partial cutting systems has increased the need for effective windthrow management. This course, which is taught by one of the course developers (see bio below), has been designed to provide participants with a basic understanding of windthrow concepts and hazard assessment methods by reviewing best management principles and practices.
This updated course covers the assessment and design process at both the stand and landscape levels and will include recent research results on: tree responses to windloading, windflow within small openings and uniformly thinned stands, GIS based techniques for building empirical models and mapping windthrow risk at the landscape scale, and windfirming techniques.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Forestry and engineering personnel, fish and wildlife biologists, geoscientists, and landscape architects who design, implement, supervise or audit development plans, silviculture prescriptions, harvesting and stand tending operations.
